Exhaust Dampers

Helps save energy and prevents the backflow of flue gases

Exhaust dampers are installed in the connecting pipe between the boiler and the chimney, closing the flue gas path to the chimney when it is no longer needed.

This prevents the heat generator and the room from cooling down and significantly contributes to energy savings. Additionally, they prevent the backflow of flue gases from other connected heating systems into the room, especially in cascade systems, and provide some sound insulation in multi-flue chimneys.

We offer both manually operated exhaust dampers and motorized dampers that are automatically controlled by the burner.

A special case are implosion dampers (Joukowski dampers) and explosion dampers (pressure relief dampers), which balance unwanted pressure fluctuations in the flue gas line.

Motorized Exhaust Damper

Motorized Exhaust Damper

A motorized exhaust damper is suitable for installation in the flue gas line of all oil- and gas-fired heating systems. It automatically closes the flue gas path during the standby periods of the heating system to prevent heat loss.

When the temperature controller calls for heat, the electric motor automatically opens the shut-off valve before the burner is activated, allowing the burner control program to be released.

Implosion Damper

Especially in large systems, a Joukowsky shock can occur in the flue gas line due to strong pressure fluctuations, triggered by events such as a backfire with subsequent pressure reduction, an abrupt burner shutdown due to a power failure or malfunction, or the rapid closing of the burner’s air supply dampers. In such cases, the hot flue gas flow is suddenly interrupted, causing a very high negative pressure in the flue gas line, which can deform it or even lead to irreparable destruction. The use of an implosion damper (also called a Joukowsky damper) prevents this effect.

In the event of a large pressure change in the flue gas line, the normally closed Joukowsky damper immediately opens inward through a spring mechanism, allowing air to flow in and equalize the pressure. Once normal pressure conditions are restored, the damper closes again, and the system can resume normal operation.

Pressure Relief Damper

When operating combustion engines, especially gas engines, it is possible for incompletely burned fuel mixtures to enter the flue gas line.

Possible causes include:

  • Leaking exhaust valves
  • Incorrect air/fuel ratio
  • Inadequate fuel supply
  • Incorrect ignition timing
  • An overly rich fuel mixture

If the unburned fuel mixture ignites, for example, on a glowing catalyst, it can lead to an explosion in the exhaust system. Therefore, the installation of a pressure relief damper (explosion damper) is especially recommended for large systems. It allows the overpressure created by the explosion to automatically escape from the system in fractions of a second, preventing damage to the flue gas line.

Jeremias explosion dampers are made of high-quality stainless steel 1.4404 (316L) and can be used up to a flue gas temperature of 600°C. Thanks to the variably adjustable opening pressure, they can be perfectly tailored to the specific system.

Advantages

Advantages of a Jeremias flue gas damper:

  • Effective energy savings through flue gas dampers
  • Prevention of thermal cooling of the heat generator
  • Reduction of room cooling through flow protection in gas-fired appliances without fans
  • Improvement of the efficiency of appliances when using a shared chimney
  • Sound insulation when multiple gas-fired appliances share a common chimney
  • Long service life due to stainless steel components
  • Suitable flue gas dampers for different applications and starting conditions
  • Implosion and explosion dampers prevent damage to the flue gas system in case of sudden pressure fluctuations
