Reduce Noise Emissions with Silencers
Decentralized energy supply systems like condensing boilers, combined heat and power plants (CHP), and others are increasingly coming closer to people's immediate living environment. Their operation can cause disturbing noises, but these can be minimized using exhaust silencers. For installations in existing buildings or retrofits, individual solutions are often required. Jeremias not only offers suitable silencer systems, but also the necessary implementation know-how.
Medium- and high-frequency noises from condensing boilers and fans, or low-frequency hums from CHP plants, can be disturbing to people in the surrounding area. Acoustic solutions for exhaust systems help prevent the noise from being radiated into the environment through the exhaust system and chimney. Depending on the noise characteristics, resonance, absorption, or combination silencers are used. Jeremias has been actively developing solutions in this area for years. In addition to a comprehensive range of standard silencers for every frequency range, Jeremias customers especially benefit from the many years of experience that allow for custom-made solutions as well as the realization of special designs. Starting with sound measurement on-site, Jeremias provides complete exhaust systems and the corresponding silencers from a single source – from simple applications in residential areas to complex industrial systems.
Successful Retrofit in a Hotel
At the Alpine Resort Goies in Tyrol, Jeremias retrofitted an existing exhaust system with silencers. To ensure that guests could enjoy an undisturbed stay in the particularly quiet environment of the hotel, noise emissions at the chimney outlet were not allowed to exceed 50 dB. The Jeremias specialists ensured this by replacing the installed stainless steel double-walled exhaust pipes with silencers that were hardly noticeable visually, connected in sequence. Initially, a resonance silencer reduces the low-frequency sounds, and then an absorption silencer reduces the mid and high-frequency tones. The challenge of the very closely spaced exhaust pipes was solved by using excentric silencers.
Silent Lofts Above a Heating Center in Central London
A project in the King's Cross district of London also presented special noise protection requirements. High-quality loft apartments were to be built above an energy center. The energy center houses three boilers, each with a power output of 10 MW. The associated exhaust system leads through three industrial chimneys integrated into the building façade and ends near the loft apartments. To avoid disturbing the future residents, the noise emissions from the boilers on balconies and terraces were not to exceed 25 dB. The solution came in the form of three silencers with exceptionally high damping values in the low-frequency range. Each one measures between 6.5 and 7.5 meters in length and has a diameter of 1.6 meters. To ensure that the promised noise emission values were met, Jeremias tested the exhaust silencers on their own test bench before delivery, demonstrating up to 45 dB reduction in the calculated frequency ranges.
Acoustic Solution for a Multi-Family Building
In Bad Friedrichshall, Baden-Württemberg, residents of a multi-family building are now benefiting from a new exhaust silencer by Jeremias that minimizes the noise emissions of the installed CHP system. The first step was a sound measurement on-site by Jeremias’ sound experts. Based on this, the silencer was designed to address the measured frequency peak of 80 Hz. Normally, silencers are installed directly after the noise source. However, due to insufficient space in this case, the silencer, designed for low-frequency emissions, was mounted on the outer facade.
